Three generations ago, public transpiration in the form of trolleys and trains facilitated access from Erie to most cities and towns. The deliberate dismantling of this public transportation system created a reliance on cars. The destruction of the trolleys helped to dismantle communities, widen the gulf between classes and undermine the environment. While cars, insurance, maintenance and fuel costs are increasing everywhere, additional facts conspire to make northwestern Pennsylvania a logical place to return to passenger rail.
The Weather The weather can be difficult, public transportation would encourage some people who prefer not to drive in snowy weather to consider living here.
Senior Citizens PA has the second highest concentration of citizens over 65 - many of whom cannot, or wish not to drive. Public transportation would help to retain and attract these residents.
Citizens with Disabilities A local university has a self-selected mandate to attract disabled students, some of whom cannot drive. Public transportation would help to attract and these students.
Social Justice The most affordable university is located 25 miles away from the highest concentration of the least affluent regional population. Public transportation would assist many to obtain an education.
