Grace
Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts, Chautauqua, NY, 1999
In a narrow side space off the main exhibition gallery, rows shallow shelving running up the high walls. Thrift store dinner plates were coated with photo-emulsion, then printed with illustrations from old cookbooks and stored on the shelves. Two light bulbs, hung on long black extensions, illuminated a countertop outfitted with speakers and miniature booklets. Each tiny booklet contained traditional graces recited before meals as well as the same images of main courses and desserts imprinted on the dinnerware. Standing near the countertop, a soft recording of graces could be heard.
