LORAN
Brewhouse Space 101, Pittsburgh, PA, 1997
The gallery's cavernous warehouse space was transformed into the open sea through the installation of a dock-like ramp against the walls. At the entrance, a black panel marked in white Morse code displayed the show's title, LORAN, an abbreviation for the nautical term "long range aides to navigation." A skeletal lighthouse cast its lamp back and forth over the concrete flooring while a welded ship form appeared to be sinking, or rising in the water. Working Morse code keys allowed visitors to communicate from one gallery space to anther. Recordings of a WWII vet keying the name of the show, other text and the verbal translation of the code, echoed through the space.
