DEMOLISHED

Despite being identified as the centerpiece of a 1993 proposed Historic Industrial District, EMI’s granite foundations, stone sills, arched loading docks and rich masonry were torn down last year. Regional leaders in 2005 stated that this site could not be rezoned to accommodate studios, arts / crafts incubators, or any kind of non-manufacturing activity. Members of C-Cubed and other leaders hoped to attract a new, tax-generating manufacturing center to employ residents of Erie. The latest news is that Prep (a private Catholic boy’s high-school) intends to purchase the property to create a sports center. Will the site be rezoned? Forty percent of the city’s real estate is tax-free. Should the city permit such a huge, prime parcel to be added to the tax-exempt rolls? (Word is the school will make a token donation to the city.) Lets hope that some kind of appropriate monument to Erie’s labor history becomes a key facet of the site.
